Satellite image of greenhouses in Almeria, Spain. Almeria has the largest concentration of greenhouses in the world, covering an estimated 40,000 square kilometres. Despite the dry climate, Almeria has access to groundwater and plenty of sunshine, making it a major hub for greenhouse agriculture. Almeria's greenhouses produce around 3 million tonnes of fruits and vegetables per year, which are exported to Europe and other parts of the world. The greenhouses cover so much area that they have likely caused a localised cooling effect in the region, because the white roofs reflect sunlight back into the atmosphere. Image obtained by the Pleiades Neo satellite on 10 June 2022.
