The Coal Gleaners Of Ilford -- Mrs, May Stocker and John Grant, both of Ilford, hard at work on the sports field today. Grant is using an old tin hat to break up the frozen ground. Coal gleaners of Newbury Park, Ilford, are solving their own fuel shortage. With pickaxes, garden rakes, iron rods and shovels, they are digging their way through the frozen sports field at the back of Newbury Park School, beneath which is layer of coal, buried since a bomb struck a dump during the war. Although its extremely heard work, the diggers are finding their labours well worth while. February 13, 1947. (Photo by Fox).
