Satellite image of a leaking slurry pipeline near the Daldykan River, Norilsk, Russia (lower centre left). Red water can be seen trailing for several kilometres along a slurry pipeline to a chemical waste storage facility (red area, bottom left) belonging to the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant (centre left). The river passes underneath this waste pipeline which has been proposed as a possible source of the water discolouration. Poor construction and thawing permafrost leading to thermomechanical stresses can contribute to pipelines bursting. Image obtained on 10th August 2016 by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
