Birch sawfly larvae (Nematus septentrionalis), members of the Tenthredinidae family. The larvae of this species feed together in a group on a number of deciduous trees but mainly birch. When mature they drop to the ground and pupate in the soil. Overwintering insects emerge from their pupal state in the spring. This species is found widely across the UK. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in September.
