Illustration of British military camps during winter at the time of the Crimean War (1854-1856). The winter of 1854-1855 was a disaster for the British. A great storm swept through Crimea, sinking many British supply ships anchored off Balaklava. The loss of critical winter supplies meant soldiers suffered from extreme cold, hunger and disease. In the distance, bell tents from the 2nd Division camp can be seen in front of the heights of Inkermann. In the middle ground are bell tents from the 1st Division as well as hospital tents and soldiers. In the foreground there is wagon carrying supplies to the camps and the skeletal remains of an animal on the roadside. Illustration by William Simpson from 'The Seat of War in the East'. Published by Paul & Dominic Colnaghi & Co in 1855.
