Basal cell carcinoma, light micrograph. Basal cell carcinoma is one of the most common cutaneous tumours, accounting for approximately 70% of all malignant diseases of the skin. They are slow-growing local cancers that rarely metastasize. This micrograph shows a basal cell carcinoma on hairy skin. The tumour is composed of cords and islands of variably basophilic cells with hyperchromatic nuclei.
