Satellite image of the average concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) over Canada and the USA between 1st May and 13th June 2023. The carbon monoxide was released from wildfires burning in Canada. High levels of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere can reduce the amount of oxygen that the blood can carry. In May and June hundreds of wildfires burnt across Canada after a heatwave and an abnormally dry spring. In early June a coastal low directed the smoke southwards in surface-level air causing the worst smoke-polluted air in the northeastern US states since records began in 2006. Data obtained by the Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite.
