Illustration of the British physician Thomas Barlow (1845-1945). Barlow studied medicine at University College, London, qualifying in 1871 and worked as a house physician under William Jenner. In 1874 he became registrar at Great Ormand Street Hospital, then assistant physician in 1875, physician in 1885 and consultant in 1899. During this time he also held posts at other London hospitals. He was known for his keen clinical observations that furthered knowledge of a number of diseases including meningitis, rickets and rheumatism. He is best known for determining that infantile scurvy was the same disease as adult scurvy. Barlow was Royal Physician to Queen Victoria and Kings Edward VII and George V.
