Caricature of Charles William de la Poer Beresford, First Baron Beresford (1846-1919) - an officer of the Royal Navy - by Phil May. In 1898?9 Beresford visited China on an investigative mission for the Associated Chambers of Commerce. One of his 'indiscreet' speeches led Salisbury to comment 'C.B. is an ass' ? and published his report, The Break-up of China (1899), advocating British reassertion of the 'open door', and Chinese reforms, and warning against the Russian threat. This is likely to be the reason for Beresford being pictured here seemingly lampooning a Chinese 'puppet'. Date: 1898
