Sabouroff painter; Lekythos (farewell at the grave); clay; quickly turned; painted (pottery); alternately fired; cold painting; clay; Total: Height: 28.5 cm; Diameter: 9.1 cm; pottery; grave; tomb; High Classical (Greek antiquity); In Greek antiquity; all vessels for ointment and perfume oils were called lekyths; today the term is used for this special type of vessel. When this vessel was cleaned in 1922; it turned out that the vase had an insert; so the filling quantity of a valuable perfume or oil was significantly reduced. In the center of the depiction is a slender; longitudinal rectangular grave stele set up on three steps; which is surrounded by bandages (gr. t鋘ie) and closed at the top by a cymation. On the right is a woman holding a flat gift basket with branches and red bandages in her left hand. In her right hand she holds a black t鋘ie. Opposite her stands a young man leaning on a stick. He is clothed in a red cloak that is curved around his hips and placed over his left arm. His right arm is stretched out. Behind him; sitting on a rock indicated by red; black; and yellow; is a young man facing to the right; who is also wrapped in a red cloak. He has crossed his legs and embraces his left knee with his arms. His gaze is directed towards the scene at the tomb. The picture is bordered at the top by two yellow-brown lines and a meandering band. On the shoulder a black ornamental palmette tendril is indicated; which is closed at the top by an egg stick. It is not always possible to decide with certainty who the figures are. Are they relatives? Is the deceased also depicted? In this case; the man sitting on the rock might be the deceased; who follows the two mourners with a certain distance while they perform the rites at his grave.
