Tuscany; Tuscan Archipelago; island of Montecristo: Interpretive center of the Tuscan Arcipelago National Park (former fishermen`s shelter) at the beach and Royal Villa (Villa Reale; Villa Watson Taylor) above main harbour Cala Maestra; Totally protected island of Montecristo (10;39 km? is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and located 39 km south of island of Elba; 43 km in distance of island of Giglio and 68 km off Piombino harbour on Italian main land. The island was inhabited since prehistoric times; became famous in medieval times (monastery of 5th; 7th and 13th century) and by the novel "The Count of Montecristo" by Alexandre Dumas; in 1844. Scottish George Watson Taylor; Baron of Strichen; built a villa here; 1852 onwards; which became a Royal Villa (Villa Reale); in 1899; when it was rented to Italian King Vittorio Emanuele III; as a hunting resort. Most famous are also the around 280 wild goats living on Montecristo; the endemic Montecristo goat (Capra aegagrus).
