Inflamed hair follicle (folliculitis) that has formed an abscess (yellow) that is surrounded by cellulitis (red) on the skin of a 32 year old Asian male patient. Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles causing inflammation and forming nodules that can suppurate and progress to abscesses and scarring. It is usually caused by bacteria. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the skin and its underlying tissues. It is often due to infection by Streptococcus sp. bacteria that enter through a wound or break in the skin. Cellulitis may cause a fever and chills, and, if left untreated, may result in septicaemia (blood poisoning) or gangrene. It is treated with antibiotics.
