Tuscany; Gaiole in Chianti; Badia a Coltibuono: massive monastery bell tower (campanile); built 1160 onwards; Founded in 1049; in 1051 the building of the monastery (full name: Abbazia di San Lorenzo a Coltibuono) began. It was in possession ot the monks of Vallombrosa; for sure since 1115. The Badia a Coltibuono (meaning: monastery of the good harvest) florished in 15th century. In 1810; under the rule of Napoleon; the monastery was finally closed. In 1846; it went into the possession of the today`s owners family; the Florentine banker family Stucchi Prinetti. Today it is famous for the wine estate with same name.
