According to the exhibition catalogue the provenance indicated by B鰀iger could not be
conclusively verified. Albert von Goldschmidt-Rothschild cannot be seen as a possible
commissioner; as he was only born in 1879. Nevertheless there is a close connection to the
family Rothschild to Kronberg and the artist's colony there. Carl Wilhelm and Hannah
Mathilde Rothschild in the year 1887 built the Villa Rothschild as a summer residency in
Kronberg. Hannah Mathilde had a close friendship with Victoria; widow of Emperor Friedrich
II. And she was at the societal centre of the Kronberg artist's colony. Therefore there
are also points of contact between the artists and the Rothschild family. To Rumpf as
well; the family had close contact and commissioned him as painter. He thus portrayed the
nieces Emma and Clementine. As such the Rothschild family could well be taken into
consideration as commissioners of this room decoration.Art trade; Van Ham.
