GILDED SILVER COLUMBINE CUP.
Nuremberg. 1623/25-1629. Hans Emmerling.

Silver; gilded. The round foot with high lobes and strongly waisted; drawn up middle. This waisted area
faceted and finely ornamentally engraved. Between the lobes fruit ornament. Small; cast
baluster shaft with three volute clasps. The correspondingly waisted and lobed cuppa above
frizzle decor. The faceted surfaces are again dot-engraved and decorated with fruit and
vegetable motifs such as pear or pea pod. Flared; smooth lip rim; on it correspondingly
designed slip lid with taste as finial. Ca. 456g. Height 35cm.

Cuppa and base inscribed: Inspection mark Nuremberg 1609-1629 (GNM no.13); maker's mark Hans Emmerling (1623/25-1634; ib. no.205). On the underside of the foot edge Cyrillic inscription among others presumably with indications about the weight. Condition B.

Emmerling cf. p.235; cat. no.226 (Here still with the outdated ascription of the maker's
mark to Hans Egerer).

Further columbine cups by Hans Emmerling; who died at only 35 years of aged; can be found
for example in the National Museums of the Kreml in Mocow or were part of the collection
of Emperor Wilhelm I; conserved in the Stiftung Haus Doorn; the residence of Emperor
Wilhelm II in exile.
