PILLAR CARPET WITH LAMA WITH SHELL TRUMPET.

Dynasty: Qing dynasty.
Date: Mid 19th c.
Technique: Pile from wool; warp and weft cotton.
Description: The Gelugpa Lama with yellow hat is shown with a shell trumpet (shanka) and prayer beads.
Over his long garment he wears draped a kasaya (Tib. chogo). He is surrounded by six of
the Eight Buddhist Treasures; above his head the canopy; only the umbrella is missing. In
the lower part the carpet shows the lines of deep water (lishui); at the upper end a pearl
border with ruyi shapes.
Measurement: 240x112cm.
