Satellite images showing the rise, evolution, and dispersion of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano plume in Tonga, over the course of 13 hours on the 15th January 2022. Gas, plume and ash from the volcano reached the mesosphere, the third layer of the atmosphere. Scientists calculated that gas, steam and ash from the volcano reached 58 kilometres at its highest point. This eruption also caused a tsunami that spread rapidly across the Pacific Ocean and an atmospheric shock wave that was detected worldwide. Images obtained by NASA's GOES 17 and Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)'s Himawari-8 satellites.
