Unknown Artist; Standing Man; 1550-1600; red chalk on paper; 10 13/16 in. x 4 7/8 in. (27.5 cm. x 12.38 cm.); This muscular; bearded man is articulated with forceful lines that give the work almost sculptural presence. The emphasis; however; is placed on the upper part of the body and head; culminating in the dramatic contrast of deeply shaded eyes and the raised; upward-pointing hand. The figure seemingly draws its strength from the spiritual realm and can tentatively ?be identified as a prophet. The unknown artist clearly reflected the influence of Michelangelo's draftsmanship as he created this study; probably in preparation of a decorative project.
