Nordlinger Ries Crater, satellite image. The city of Nordlinger (orange circle, lower centre left) is located within this crater in Bavaria, Germany. The crater was formed around 14 million years ago by the impact of a meteorite. It has a diameter of 24 kilometres. Dark green semi-circular areas of forest delineate the rim of the crater.
