Illustration of the movement of the black-hole system GRO J1655-40 across the Milky Way galaxy. The yellow star is our Sun. The system is moving through space at a speed of 400,000 kilometres per hour, which is four times faster than the average velocity of stars in the galactic neighbourhood. GRO J1655-40 is a binary system containing an F-type primary star and a massive stellar black hole orbiting each other. It is thought its velocity is because the black hole formed when its star exploded as a supernova.
