RISORGIMENTO A page taken from the Garibaldi Family Memories Album. In the center: in a band with the words in English; the portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi; the hero of Palermo; Naples; Milazzo; Marsala; Turno; Galata; surmounted by the motto "Freedom for Italy; Rome or death"; from the band hangs a small bow of red fabric; probably a secular relic; a shred of Garibaldi's shirt; below; a cut-out with the portrait of the general and the tricolor with the words "aid to Garibaldi"; an exhortation to support him in the struggle or reference to his promotion and participation in the formation of Mutual Aid Societies throughout the united peninsula. On the sides: portraits of the British vice-consul in Naples in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies; William Dorant (1784 - 1849) and his wife Mrs. Flora Lambert Dorant; who in 1837 established the first "reading room" in Bourbon Naples; where under virtue of diplomatic privileges it was possible for foreigners to access books and foreign periodical press (otherwise and elsewhere prohibited because considered dangerously liberal); which later became a reference also for local lovers of liberal and anti-Bourbon political ideas.
