The painting present stems from the best period of Troyon's work.
The masters of the School of Barbizon connected their criticism of the destruction of the native forest of Fontainebleau with the motif of the "woodcutter" as early as the middle of the 19th century. And they have done so with success. Thanks to their initiative Emperor Napol閛n III put great parts of the forest unter nature protection in 1853 and extending in 1861.
