Reconstructions of Homo floresiensis (lower), based on fossils found in 2003 in Liang Bua cave, Flores, Indonesia, and the Lucy (upper) specimen of Australopithecus afarensis. The H. floresiensis fossils were dated to between 95,000 and 13,000 years ago. This hominin was very small, just over a metre tall, and is thought to be a descendant of Homo erectus that underwent island dwarfism. It is thought to have become extinct around 12,000 years ago and therefore co-existed with modern humans (Homo sapiens). Lucy was found in the Afar region of Ethiopia between 1973 and 1977.
