Ireland; city of Galway: monument to the visit of Columbus to Galway; in 1477; unveiled 1992. The monument or statue; built by Mick Wilkins; in 1992; is located at Spansih Arch parade; the former place of the fish market of Galway. The monument remembers the visit of Columbus (Cristoforo Colombo) to Galway; in 1477; where he got evidence of the Western world across the Atlantic. The inscription on the monument reads on one side in English and Italian and on the opposite side in Irish and Italian following text in capital letters: "On these shores around 1477 ther Genoese sailor Cristoforo Colombo found sure signs of land beyond the Atlantic. La citta di Genova alla citty de Galway 29.6.1992" The monument was a gift of the city of Genova (italy); to Galway; and unveiled on 29th of June; 1992.
