Ireland; County Meath; city of Trim: Barbican Gate on the grounds of Trim Castle; built 1172 - 1224; biggest Norman Castle in Ireland. Trim Castle (Irish: Caisle醤 Bhaile Atha Troim) is a Norman Castle on the south bank of River Boyne; at a fording point. It waa built by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter de Lacy as their main stronghold in their Lordship of Meath. In 1172; Hugh de Lacy started to build a huge ringwork castle which was immediately destroyed and burnt down by Gaelic High King of Ireland; Ruaidri Ua Conchobair. In 1173; Hugh de Lacy repared everything and started to build a new castle. After his death; in 1186; his son Walter de Lacy finished the work; until 1224. In 13th century and 14th century; further buildings were added. In 15th century; Irish Parliament met in Trim Castle; for seven times. In 1649; the garrison iof Trim Castle fled. After 1680; the castle belonged to the Wellesley family; but Arthur Wellesley; Duke of Wellington; sold it. In 1993; it was again sold to the state of Ireland and restored. The castle; today is world famous for being the location of in film scenes in the block busterfilm Braveheart; directed by Mel Gibson.
