Estonia; L滗ne-Viru County; city of Rakvere: bronze statue of the aurochs (Tarvas statue) by sculptor Tauno Kangro; unveiled 2002; near Rakvere Castle (German: Burg Rakvere; Burg Wesenberg; also Burg Wierland); The statue is 7 m long; 4 m high and weighs 7 tons. It was erected in 2002; the 700th anniversary of the city of Rakvere; on Vallim鋑i (castle hill). The base of the statue is of granite. The monument shows as well the coat of arms of Rakvere; a short city history in 6 languages; and the names of the private sponsors. The very important Castle ruin was built in13th century on the castle hill Vallim鋑i; where before was an Estonian stronghold; first mentioned in 1226. This early wooden castle was named Tarvanpea (German also Tarvanpe); meaning head of an aurochs. A first stone castle was built midf of 13th century by the Danes. In 1268; in the battle of the city called now German Wesenberg and Wesenbergh; in Russian Rakovor; the German-Danish army lost against the Russians. in 1302; Rakvere and the castle gained city rights. In 1346; the castle was sold by the Danes and went into property of the Teutonic Order. The Teutoinic order extended the castle until 16th century. In the Livonian War (1558 - 1581); after the siege of Wesenberg; in 1574; the Russians conquered the castle; in 1581; and built a ring wall. After further damages; the castle fell into ruins; after the Great Northern War (1700 - 1721).
