Egyptian: Head of a Statue of a Man; Unidentified artist; Egyptian; 1539-1070 BCE; or later; Stone; possibly diorite; This elegant stone head was once part a statue of an Egyptian man who was probably a noble or an official. His shoulder-length wig; bearing wave-like patterns; and his idealized features; including the upturned almond-shaped eyes; are typical of art made during the New Kingdom period (1539-1070 BCE). The statue may have been installed as a funerary monument inside a temple; where it would have acted as a site through which the man's "living soul" could routinely return to earth after his death.; Overall: 8 3/8 x 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. (21.3 x 19.1 x 14 cm)
