Shenyang, China - December 2000 It could be anywhere, but this city is Shenyang, in China's industrial north-east; a place definitely not frequented by tourists. This startling red sky at dawn owes much to the horrific levels of air pollution which plague the city, together with all the conurbations of Liaoning Province. I should know, I was director of the EU team of scientists that was measuring it at the time!
