US military polio patient (centre) in an iron lung at the British Hospital in Calcutta, India. The iron lung mechanically moves air in and out of the lungs when the patient is incapable of breathing for themselves. Devices such as these were used by polio patients whose ability to breath was paralysed due to the crippling viral disease. Photographed on the 11th of August 1944.
