Illustration of the cinchona plant (Cinchona officinalis). The plant is used for its medicinal properties. It contains quinine, and was the original source of this anti-malarial drug. It was first described to Europeans in 1633 by a Jesuit, and is also called Jesuit's Bark. The plant originates from South America, in Peru and Ecuador. Engraving published in 1801.
