Man's Curiosity And Science Tactile Violent Volcano -- The mountainside at many places is covered with basaltic lava beds, black, rough and slaggy. Here and there a huge block rears its monstrous, sharp-edged bulk from a craggy elevation. There have been innumerable lava flows here within the memory of mar., some short and forking out in different directions, others long and broad and destroying whole villages and populations, still others superimposed upon previously-formed beds. The volcano is still as active as ever, prolific in eruptions and explosions - a ceaseless menace. October 1, 1939. (Photo by Japan Photo Library).
