Holy Bathing Ceremonies Begin In India -- This is a general view, made from a watch tower, of thousands of the faithful at the confluence of the Ganges and Jamuna rivers at Allahabad, India, Jan. 14, during bathing ceremonies sacred to all orthodox Hindus was the beginning of the month-long Kumbha Mela period, held but once in 12 years. The ceremony marks the legendary victory of gods over demons after a 12-year battle over a pitcher of nectar.
