The Allied High Commission was established by the United States, the United Kingdom, and France after the 1948 breakdown of the Allied Control Council to regulate and supervise the development of the newly established Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). The Commission took its seat at the Hotel Petersberg near Bonn and started its work on September 21, 1949. It ceased to function under the terms of the Bonn-Paris conventions, on May 5, 1955. General Brian Hubert Robertson (22 July 1896 - 29 April 1974) was a senior British Army officer during the Second World War. After the war he was the Deputy Military Governor of Germany from 1945 to 1948, and then the Military Governor from 1948 to 1949. Andre Francois-Poncet (13 June 1887 - 8 January 1978) was a French politician and diplomat. John Jay McCloy (March 31, 1895 - March 11, 1989) was an American lawyer, diplomat, banker, and a presidential advisor.
