Portrait of William Montague Cobb (1904-1990), American anthropologist and physician. Cobb is best known for being the first African American to receive a PhD in physical anthropology. His research focused on physical anatomy and issues related to African American health. He challenged scientific theories of African American inferiority. Cobbs built an anatomical laboratory at Howard university and was a professor of physical anatomy at the university. He also served as the president of the civil rights organization National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1976 to 1983.
