The British trading post at Singapore was established in 1819 when Thomas Stamford Raffles signed a treaty with Sultan Hussein Shah on behalf of the East India Company. In 1824 the whole island became a British possession and two years later it became part of the Straits Settlements. Sanford painted this view of Singapore after serving in the Far East during the 2nd China War (1857-1860).); by National Army Museum .
