Light micrograph of paragneiss from the summit of Mutegg, Ultental, South Tyrol, Italy. Paragneiss are rich in quartz, feldspar and mica. They can contain kyanite, staurolite, garnet and other minerals as sub-mixtures. It also contains muscovite, staurolite, macroscopic quartz lenses and ribbons. This paragneiss experienced its main metamorphosis before 350-385 million years ago. A later alpine overprinting, in the course of the unfolding or uplifting of the Alps, took place approximately 80 million years ago. Magnification: x30 when printed at 15 centimetres wide.
