5052662 The yard at the rear of no. 4 St Barnabas\' Square, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo) by Frowde, John James (1868-1946); Manx National Heritage (Isle of Man); (add.info.: On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "(Mid-winter) The yard at the rear of No.4 S. Barnabas\' Square. As stated, it had no exit: Whereas the front of the house was furnished on the upper floor with five windows, the rear has six on ground and upper floors, three on each side of the ornate window that lit the staircase from the entrance hall. This print shews the double roof arrangement [sketch] which made the old house cover a greater area than a view of it from the square would suggest. In another note it had an exit onto Spittal\'s Court earlier on. 30.12.34 Mr \'Jimmy\' Rooney, (the lame one of the five brothers Rooney) who has greatly helped me with information, & whose home was in Spittal\'s Court for many years, (52) told me that early on there had been an exit from the yard of No 4 into the inner yard of Spittal\'s Court. Some years back, a purchaser of Spittal\'s houses and the cottages in the Court objected to it, & it was walled up. By then, the occupants of \'Flea Park\', No.4, not being fastidious, would cheerfully accept their deprivation of the rear exit, philosophically doubtless. "Like it or lump it." There was a \'Flea park\' in the 18forties. Jas. Cowin\'s reminiscences, in the Crooked Lane area, between old Lord St. & the Fleetwood (Lawrence\'s) Corner. There have been many old houses so designated since. 11 Seneschal Lane, 4 St. Barnabas Sq. et alia. Re the six windows up and down, three each side of the circular hall-light and the door below it, ( mentioned on front of this cover); I was surprised 11.8.35 to find that in a view from the Head in 18.. the year of this building only shewed four windows all told, and no sign of the hall-light window at all. The little attic window is in the view. Find this in my whole plate series and check. Yes, saw it 19.9.35 [sketch] - further, look it up again.
