Collection of items owned by Prince Maximilian. Depicted items include a painted bison hide or robe illustrated with military exploits of Mandan chief, Mato-Tope. Pipe of Mandan warrior-chief Dipauch, an ermine skin pounch, an elk-antler quirt, a bird-bone war whistle thought to belong to Mato-Tope, an otter-skin pouch with quillwork and beads, a tobacco pouch from skin of a white skunk, a "conquest bundle" (Hidatsa), a knife and sheath, and a Mandan snowshoe. In 1836 Maximilian commissioned Bodmer to create illustrations to accompany the text of his atlas documenting their travels.
