Chapin, a railroad tycoon and congressman, commissioned a large-scale bronze likeness of his ancestor, Deacon Samuel Chapin (1595??675) who left Devon to escape religious presecution and was one of the three founding fathers of Springfield, Massachusetts (Adawan). The sculptor developed this statue into an embodiment . . . of the \'Puritan" which was unveiled in the town on Thanksgiving Day 1887, and made smaller versions because of the statue\'s popularity - this cast after 1899); American, out of copyright.
