Styled Lord Mahon until he succeeded his father as 5th Earl Stanhope in 1855. He played a vital part in the 1841 emendation of the Copyright Act, and played key roles in the Commission for Promoting the Fine Arts, the foundation of the National Portrait Gallery in 1856 and the formation of the Historical Manuscripts Commission. He also acted as a Trustee of the British Museum and Honorary Antiquary to the Royal Academy. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1841 and became President in 1846. In 1875, his final year as President and the first year of the Society\'s history in Burlington House, Schliemann read a paper there on his discoveries at Hisarlik, the site of ancient Troy.); Scottish, out of copyright.
