George C. Marshall (1880-1959), American statesman and general pictured boarding a B-17B Flying Fortress dressed in civilian attire. Marshall served as US Army Chief of Staff during World War Two from 1939-1945. Following the war, Marshall was appointed as Secretary of State from 1947??949. During this period, he proposed the European Recovery Program, now known as the Marshall Plan. The Marshall Plan provided aid from the USA to support the recovery of countries in post-war Europe. This work led to Marshall being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. Marshall also served as Secretary of Defense during the Korean War from 1949??950 and president of the American Red Cross 1949-1950. Photographed c. 1940.
