The centre shop, Blenkinsop Cooper, is a barrel-makers\' shop. Behind the old houses is the Corn Exchange, designed by the Newcastle architects John and Benjamin Green, and begun in 1838. The Exchange was incorporated into the Town Hall, built 1858-63. This was demolished in the 1970s.
