1213997 Old Buildings, Union Street and Corn Exchange before Town Hall was Built (bodycolour on paper) by Storey, John (1828-88); 31.2 x22.8 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: John Storey\'s note on the back of this picture records that he painted it in 1881 from a sketch made in 1854. The centre shop, Blenkinsop Cooper, is a barrel-makers\' shop. Behind the old houses is the Corn Exchange, designed by the Newcastle architects John and Benjamin Green, and begun in 1838. The Exchange was incorporated into the Town Hall, built 1858-63. This was demolished in the 1970s.
