Bronze plaque depicting a Lapith and Centaurs in battle. Hammered bronze sheet depicting the Gigantomachy, the conflict between the old and the new world order, was depicted very frequently in ancient Greek art. It symbolizes the triumph of order and civilization over savagery, barbarism and anarchy. The Centaurs, half horse half man, had been invited to the wedding but drank too much wine and attempted to abduct the Lapith women. In the fight which followed, Apollo stands calmly at the centre while Peirithoos, the Lapith king and bridegroom, leads the attack on the Centaurs. Olympia Archaeological Museum.
