Young Zemba girl, also called OvaZemba, from the Kunene region of Namibia, carrying a bundle of firewood on her head. Head-loading, also known as head-carrying or head porterage requires the person to have strong stabiliser muscles. When performed correctly, this method of carrying a load is said to reduce the stress on the limbs of the person carrying the load, compared to other methods of porterage. Most Zemba live without access to electricity and water is often scarce. Female members of the group perform the daily task of collecting, which they carry in containers balancing on their head. Photographed in Opuwo, Kunene region, Northern Namibia.
