The Aardwolf (Proteles cristata) inhabits the grasslands of eastern and southern Africa. It is mostly solitary and a nocturnal animal that lives in abandoned aardvark burrows and grows to lengths of 80 centimetres. The majority of its diet consists of termites, which it licks up with its long sticky tongue, but it will take other insects, bird's eggs and occasionally small rodents. Its large ears enable it to hear termites moving underground. Photographed in the Northern Cape province of South Africa.
