491157 Mourning Saint John and Mourning Virgin, Kingdom of Castile and Leon, c.1250-1275 (polychromed oak) by Spanish School, (13th century); John h:154.90 w:36.85 d:20.35 Virgin h:151.15 w:33.00 d:21.60 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: These figures of the Virgin and Saint John once formed part of a Crucifixion group that would have originally included a figure of Christ on the cross shown at center. Fortunately the original polychromy of the two figures has been preserved, affording the viewer a rare opportunity to appreciate a rich medieval decorative colour pattern suggestive of some early textiles. Though they date to the 13th century, the two figures reflect a late 12th-century style. ); Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Francis F. Prentiss; Spanish, out of copyright.
