474141 Durham Cathedral, 1795 (w/c with touches of gum arabic on wove paper) by Girtin, Thomas (1775-1802); 39.6x26.5 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: Thomas Girtin was known for the sense of misty atmosphere in his w/cs. This view of Durham Cathedral is in the Picturesque style, which emphasised the irregularity of nature. Picturesque compositions were generally asymetrical, and often included romantic ancient buildings, such as this. Girtin has included scaffolding (sketched in pencil) up the right tower of the front of the cathedral - this kind of imperfection was a feature of Picturesque style. The picture was painted early in Girtin\'s career, and was copied from a composition by his teacher, Edward Dayes; ); 穢 Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums; English, out of copyright.
