The North East border castle they have raided is burning behind them. Scottish subjects such as this were very popular in the 19th century, particularly after Queen Victoria bought her estate at Balmoral and made regular visits to Scotland. Richard Beavis painted many pictures of landscape and coastal scenes. He often gave them a romantic theme from history, as in this picture.
