Balston was also an painter, but is best known as an art writer and collector. The paint of this portrait has been thickly applied using a palette knife. Gertler exaggerated the tan of Thomas Balston\'s features to a bright orange, the complementary colour of the blue of his shirt. This combination of colours creates a visually intense effect.
