French physicist Bertrand L. Goldschmidt (1912-2002) receiving the Seventh annual Atoms for Peace Award in 1967. Goldschmidt is best known as the father of the French atomic bomb. During World War Two, Goldschmidt was the only Frenchman to work on the Manhattan project at the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory. After the war, he served as the head of the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA).
